With his vibrant Hungarian dances, Johannes Brahms transports us to the charming countryside of Hungary. The country's folk music served as an endless source of inspiration for numerous composers. Although Brahms' melodies carry a folk touch, they are uniquely his own. Like many Romantic contemporaries, he infused an exotic flair into the symphonic tradition. Béla Bartók also delved into the roots of Hungarian music. Unlike Brahms, his music occasionally grates, aiming to capture the peculiarities of folk music. Bartók blends refinement and a raw style into a dazzling interplay of sounds. A lively, energetic program for a delightful Sunday kickoff.
