Mission statement

The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra aims to use its base in Antwerp and its status as the symphonic orchestra  of Flanders to reach out to and inspire the widest possible audience with top-quality concert experiences.

  • The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra is an entrepreneurial organisation, involved both in organising classical concerts and social outreach projects and in selling these productions at a domestic and international level. The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra will maintain constructive and sustainable relations with its partners, government authorities, businesses and the wider community.
  • The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra is a recognised Flemish cultural institution; in addition to its role in performing in the region’s major venues, it is therefore also a cultural ambassador for Flanders abroad.
  • The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra maintains a broad repertoire extending from Baroque and Romantic music to contemporary pieces. Within that range, it has acquired particular strengths in focusing on Flemish cultural heritage, innovative projects, and music education. Our cooperation with world-renowned artists allows us to maintain this excellence.
  • The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra has strong ties with Antwerp, its home base, which it continues to foster through social and educational outreach targeting highly diverse populations.

 

Vision

The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra is in the process of changing from being an orchestra to becoming a professional cultural institution with the following fundamental goals:

1. Remaining a strong, unmistakeable brand in the cultural landscape: 

  • developing artistic qualities
  • engaging in leadership & bridge-building between cultural institutions
  • maintaining financial stability
  • entering into broad-based partnerships (media, finance...)
  • functioning as a source of pride for the people of Flanders, Antwerp, and all those involved with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra
  • continuing to build international recognition (tours, partnerships), having become a well-known, in-demand player on the international scene

2. Acting as a cultural heritage lab, furthering innovation in a number of key areas:

  • classical music beyond the canonical classics
  • organisation (incl. conductor recruitment; workplace culture)
  • multimedia and technology: staying on trend
  • HR, health and safety, and wellbeing at work

3. Using Antwerp as a home base to strengthen social engagement:

  • integral part of the Elisabeth Center; partnership with the Royal Zoological Society (KMDA)
  • CSR with specific priorities
  • social relevance (incl. policies on specific target groups)
