Wu Di

Wu Di grew up in Chongqing, China, and started taking violin lessons at the age of six. He then went to the Conservatory of Sichuan where he studied violin and viola. From 2001 he continued his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, where he received his master's and soloist degrees with distinction. He was taught by David Takeno, Thomas Riebl and Bruno Guiranna, among others. As a student, he played in the best youth orchestras including the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra, the Verbier Festival Orchestra and the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra. In 2007 he moved to Switzerland where he played on a regular basis with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the orchestras of the Zurich Opera House and the Gstaad Menuhin Festival. Other orchestras, including the Verbier Chamber Orchestra, the National Centre Performing Arts Orchestra from China, the BBC Philharmonic and the Niederbayerische Philharmonie, also appealed to him. Chamber music plays a major role in his musical career: Wu Di has played chamber music concerts in Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, China and elsewhere in various formations. Over the years, he became strongly influenced by top ensembles such as the string quartets Smetana, Takàcs, Cleveland and Amadeus. Since 2018, he plays at the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra.
