Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester

orchestra

The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1765, is one of the oldest and most prestigious orchestras in the world. Holding the status of Norway’s national orchestra, it enjoys a formidable reputation, which was crowned in 2025 with the title of ‘Orchestra of the Year’ by Gramophone Magazine. Its historic link with Edvard Grieg, who served as artistic director in the 19th century, remains at the heart of the artistic identity of this 101-piece ensemble.

The orchestra is a regular guest at major international venues, including the Concertgebouw, the BBC Proms, and Carnegie Hall. In recent years, the ensemble has achieved great success with award-winning opera and ballet productions and extensive tours across Europe and the United States, often collaborating with top soloists such as Leif Ove Andsnes and Lise Davidsen. Their discography is impressive and diverse, featuring prestigious awards such as Gramophone Recording of the Year for their performance of Britten’s Peter Grimes.

Beyond its artistic excellence, the orchestra is strongly committed to innovation and education. In 2015, it launched the free streaming service Bergenphilive, making its concerts accessible to a global audience. The orchestra also plays a crucial social role through the Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (BFUng) and various projects aimed at young and old alike, seamlessly linking its rich heritage with the experiences of future generations of music lovers.
