Giovanni Sollima

cello

Born in Palermo, Giovanni Sollima is a groundbreaking cellist and composer who effortlessly blends classical music with rock and ethnic influences. He has collaborated with legendary figures ranging from Claudio Abbado to Patti Smith and is renowned for his unconventional approach. In addition to his 1679 Francesco Ruggeri cello, he plays instruments of his own design and has even performed on an ice cello inside an igloo. His compositions are performed worldwide by top orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and soloists like Yo-Yo Ma.

Alongside his extensive concert career at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and La Scala, Sollima is a highly sought-after composer for film directors and choreographers, including Wim Wenders and Peter Greenaway. A dedicated educator, he is a professor at the prestigious Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Kronberg Cello Academy. His discography, featuring highlights such as Aquilarco and We Were Trees, underscores his unique position as a modern "Ba-Rock" innovator in the international music scene.
