Laura van der Heijden

cello

Laura van der Heijden is recognised as one of the leading cellists of her generation. Since winning the BBC Young Musician competition in 2012 at the age of 15, she has built a flourishing international career. As the winner of the 2025 Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist Award, she is praised for her deeply felt interpretations and compelling programming, frequently appearing on the covers of major publications such as The Strad.

In the 2025/26 season, she shines as Artist in Residence at Scotland’s Lammermuir Festival and performs as a soloist with renowned orchestras including the Ulster Orchestra and Philharmonie Zuidnederland. A particular highlight is the innovative Papillons project with the Manchester Collective. Additionally, Laura is a highly sought-after chamber musician and a core member of the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective, performing at prestigious venues such as the Concertgebouw and Wigmore Hall.

A dedicated advocate for new music, she has premiered works by composers such as Cheryl Frances-Hoad, whose music she also performed at the BBC Proms. Her discography on the Chandos label is impressive; her debut album 1948 immediately won an Edison Klassiek Award. Laura plays a rare Francesco Ruggieri cello from the late seventeenth century, which supports her deep and distinctive sound both in the concert hall and the recording studio.
