Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester

orchestra

Founded in 1986/87, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (GMJO) is regarded as one of the world's most prestigious youth orchestras and a vital training ground for musical excellence. With a repertoire spanning from classical to contemporary music—and a distinct focus on the great symphonic works of the Romantic and late-Romantic periods—the orchestra attracts the world's finest conductors and soloists, including legends like Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink, Martha Argerich, and Yo-Yo Ma. Its exceptional artistic standards make the GMJO a regular guest at the most renowned international venues and festivals, such as the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the BBC Proms. The orchestra's influence is profound, with numerous former members now holding principal positions in leading European orchestras. Beyond its musical mission, and with the support of the Austrian government and the City of Vienna, the GMJO also fulfills a social role as an official ambassador for UNICEF Austria.
