Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill
Three gods arrive on earth in hopes of finding a good man (or woman). Bertolt Brecht’s parable ‘The Good Person of Szechwan’ is food for thought as we ask ourselves what is ‘goodness’ or doing good. The plot serves as a storyline for this unique chamber music concert. Excerpts from Brecht’s play are combined with music from that same fascinating period, i.e., the early 20th century when composers such as Hindemith, Eisler and Weill rejected the old worldview and jazz and cabaret influences punctuated chamber music. Each of the aforementioned composers looked to Brecht for inspiration. The socially committed context of these works contrasts radically with their humorous content.
