It’s story time! Maurice Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye tells tales of Mother Goose. His musical versions of these 17th-century folk tales, first published in 1697, are a wonderful translation of childlike innocence and imagination. Next up, you can hear Arthur and Lucas Jussen – former child prodigies turned masters of their craft – at work in Francis Poulenc’s Double Concerto for 2 pianos, a wonderful example of a rare genre. Before setting Ravel free to pay homage to the Viennese waltz, the orchestra will turn its attention to Shakespeare’s Anthony and Cleopatra, as set to music by the French composer Florent Schimtt. This orchestral suite shows him to have an equally subtle command of orchestration as his contemporary Ravel.
