The title is clear: Dvořák's last symphony was to demonstrate in Europe what a work from the New World could sound like. The Bohemian nationalist had moved to New York in 1892 to create an autonomous, American musical culture. He commissioned transcriptions of Native American melodies, studied Negro spirituals and set an example himself by incorporating Afro-American and Native American influences in his Ninth symphony. Young promise Jamie Phillips traces the americana of Dvořák to the minimal music of John Adams. With the bonus of a fascinating double concerto by Swiss composer Richard Dubugnon featuring world stars Gautier Capuçon and Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
