Finnish conductor Dima Slobodeniouk has a treat in store for music connoisseurs. The programme starts with Haydn’s Symphony No. 22 in E major. Its nickname is ‘The Philosopher’, an allusion to the playful melody and counterpoint that evoke the questions and answers in a philosophical dispute. Sibelius’ much-loved and intriguing Violin Concerto in D minor is much more serious, conjuring images of Finland’s rugged natural landscapes. A stunning concerto that requires a sensitive soloist and talented performer such as Augustin Hadelich. In his seventh and last symphony, Prokofiev affords his audience a rare glimpse into his soul. Nostalgic melodies contrast with vivacious themes in a work that provides a fitting and memorable final chord to a turbulent life.
