Chamber music: Jewish melancholia
With the Nazis in power, all music written by Jewish composers was labelled entartete Musik, or ‘degenerate music’. The concert halls were devoid of the work of great Jewish artists like Kurt Weill and Erwin Schulho ̄, let alone that any music inspired by the Jewish tradition would be allowed to be played like Two Hassidic Dances by Zikmund Schul and the irresistible Klezmer music.
