Like the God Janus, Francis Poulenc was a composer of extremes, working in Paris between the Wars. The versatility that is so characteristic of Poulenc is evident in his frequent use of woodwind instruments in his compositions. His early chamber music works for wind instruments, including the Trio and the Sextet, are intriguing, somewhat jazzy character pieces, combining humour with a hint of nostalgia. Belgian composer Albert Huybrechts was influenced by Poulenc’s recipe for success, creating an extremely refined suite for wind instruments and piano, in which each instrument seems to have its own personality.
