Mozart was a dab hand at the flute quartet, as was his contemporary Domenico Cimarosa; the genre produced hits for them both. This genre was popular also with 20th century composers. Aaron Copland wrote two raw threnodies in this format: one for his colleague Igor Stravinsky and one for his friend Beatrice Cunningham. Paul Ben-Haim, Germanborn and emigrated to Israel, conjures up the Middle East with his tranquil Serenade.
