Richard Egarr conducts and plays Bach
Bach and Mendelssohn have more in common than you might think. Both composers turned their home town of Leipzig into the epicentre of Germanic music culture. They were masters of their craft, deeply religious Protestants, brilliant organists, maestros of the fugue and the chorale. They were also innovative and strong-willed, with no patience for bureaucracy or mediocrity. Conductor and keyboardist Richard Egarr will be demonstrating how surprisingly simple it is to bridge the gap between Bach’s whirling Baroque music and the Neoclassical daredevilry of Mendelssohn. Two festive concertos from the Thomaskantor will be followed up by Mendelssohn’s imposing, atmospheric Scottish Symphony.
