Contrasts. The music of Mahler and Shostakovich is full of them. Markus Stenz leads the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra in two emotionally multifaceted clappers from the symphonic repertoire. Mahler's First Symphony opens with the awakening of nature and, according to the composer, ends with a musical battle "in which victory is farthest away, when we imagine it closest. In Shostakovich's searingly intense First Violin Concerto, the violinist moves between dark and light. A part tailor-made for Sergei Katyatrian, one of the most sensitive winners in the history of the Elisabeth Competition.
