In a week when the world reflects on Armenian history, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to the memory under the baton of Emmanuel Tjeknavorian. Now, the conductor reunites with fellow Armenian-descended pianist Kiron Atom Tellian for Khachaturian’s dazzling Piano Concerto. Steeped in Armenian and Georgian folklore, the work reflects the rituals and melodies of the composer’s youth. The programme also features Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9. Defying the Soviet regime’s demand for a grand victory anthem, Shostakovich instead delivered a surprisingly playful and modest masterpiece. Judge for yourself and enjoy this evening of musical defiance and heritage.
