Russians with an American Dream? It might sound a little odd, but after the outbreak of the October Revolution they did exist. Rachmaninoff, bewildered by the violence in his home country, hoped to find success in America when he emigrated in 1918. But a longing for home turned his dream into a nightmare, and his days of industrious composing were no longer. Of his six American works, the Symphonic Dances are the result of a final yet ingenious revival. Elim Chan conducts this fantastically diverse dance composition, with ArmenianAmerican classical pianist Sergei Babayan treats us to one of Mozart’s most colourful and multifaceted piano concertos.
