Ivan Fischer

Iván Fischer is a versatile conductor, composer, and opera director who was educated in Budapest and Vienna, where he served as an assistant to Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In 1983, he founded the Budapest Festival Orchestra, gaining international acclaim by combining artistic excellence with innovative concert formats, such as educational projects and performances for young audiences. In addition to his work in Budapest, he has led renowned ensembles in Washington, Lyon, and Berlin, and has been a regular guest of the Concertgebouw Orchestra since 1987, which appointed him Honorary Guest Conductor in 2021.

Fischer is well known for his social commitment and his role as a champion of democracy and human rights, for which he has received international awards such as the Crystal Award and the Concertgebouw Prize (2026). To devote full attention to his creative vision and his own compositions, he limits his guest conducting to a select number of top-tier orchestras. His distinguished career is further marked by numerous honours, including membership of the Royal Academy of Music and the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, underscoring his status as one of the most influential musicians of our time.
