The origin of Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps is just as incredible as the composition itself. In 1940, Messiaen wrote what is possibly his most important work as a French prisoner of war in a German camp. The quartet had its premier in the camp, with Messiaen at the piano. The Quatuor, which draws on the biblical theme of the Apocalypse for inspiration, evokes mysticism and a sense of eternity. As such, the AMUZ provides the perfect backdrop for this milestone in the chamber music repertoire, which will be performed by soloists of the Antwerp Symphony and artist in residence Steven Osborne.
