Theater Concert: Ein Sommernachtstraum with Herreweghe (online)
Only sixteen years after his well-known overture A Midsummer Night’s Dream did Mendelssohn compose the complete stage music for this 17th-century romantic comedy about a magic flower, an amateur theatre company, four complicated love lives, fairies in a moonlit forest and a man with the head of an ass. Mendelssohn’s stage music, just like the uncontested masterpiece by Shakespeare, is still rock steady centuries after they were created. Philippe Herreweghe and theatre company de Roovers seal this successful marriage of music and theatre with a bewitching theatre concert.
