Philippe Herreweghe

Honorary conductor

Philippe Herreweghe is a leading figure in the world of early music, while remaining highly active across other repertoires. His insights into Romantic orchestral and choral music have enriched the global understanding of tonal colour and balance.

Born in Ghent, he combined his university studies with musical training at the conservatory. During this period, he began conducting, and in 1970, he founded Collegium Vocale Gent. Since 2009, he and Collegium Vocale Gent have actively worked on developing a large-scale symphonic choir of European standing.

Herreweghe has been associated with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra since 1998 and is a highly sought-after guest conductor with orchestras such as the Concertgebouworkest and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. Since 2010, Herreweghe has released recordings on his own label, φ (PHI), building a rich and varied catalogue with complete artistic freedom. Through this label, he has published an extensive discography with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, including a complete cycle of Schumann symphonies.

Owing to his consistent artistic vision and commitment, he has received numerous distinctions. In 2021, the Flemish Government presented him with the Ultima for General Cultural Merit in recognition of his entire career. The partnership with Conductor Laureate Philippe Herreweghe — world-renowned as a specialist in historically informed performance practice — has spanned more than 25 years, granting the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra an exceptional standing in the international orchestral world. In the 2026–2027 season, he presents an impressive triptych reflecting his versatile signature: Dvořák’s monumental Requiem alongside Collegium Vocale Gent, an all-Bach concert focusing on the Baroque, and a Beethoven programme bridging the gap to the Classical period.
