Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra is one of those works that you have to have heard at least once in your lifetime. The Polish composer drew on local music culture to give the historically tormented soul of his people a voice. But before tackling this monumental 20th century orchestral work, the Antwerp Symphony’s musicians will perform Bartók’s whirling Dance Suite. Bartok also drew heavily on folk music for his compositions. The result of his musical ethnography is a fiercely dynamic work, sweeping the orchestra to triumphant climaxes. The concert also marks the premiere of Kris Defoort’s Four Night Preludes, in which the Belgian composer reflects on his own work. A symphonic orchestra at the top of its form.
