Late Romantic German- Austrian repertoire is familiar ground for Marc Albrecht. His programme features two boundary-breaking works. Arnold Schoenberg’s intimate tone poem Verklärte Nacht, scored for a chamber ensemble, explores lovers almost lost and then found. In contrast, Gustav Mahler’s symphonic work Das Lied von der Erde utilises the full orchestra in its search for a connection with the sublime. Both composers sought to connect on different levels. The programme, concluding with Mahler’s transcendent “Ewig... ewig...”, brings Marc Albrecht’s first season as chief conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra to an expressive close.
