In his famous Enigma Variations – including the stirring Nimrod – Elgar used one particular theme to compose a set of portraits of his friends. Pictured Within: Birthday Variations for M.C.B., on the other hand, is a series of musical portraits of Martyn Brabbins by fourteen of his friends, commissioned in part by the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. This composition is a very special 60th birthday present for our popular guest conductor, and will receive its first public unwrapping at the 2019 BBC Proms.
