Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 was his last hurrah as a concert soloist. It is in parts an unusually melancholic and stoic piece, as if its composer felt the end approaching. His compelling Masonic Funeral Music, written as a Masonic commission, as the name suggests, is a further bridge between Mozart and the Romantic age. Brahms’ pastoral Symphony No. 2 was his own outstanding contribution to this new era in music, in which composers dedicated themselves to expressing their innermost feelings.
