Of all the symphonies, Beethoven's third is, without contradiction, the most heroic. This is indicated not only by the title and the misplaced dedication to Napoleon, but also by the pounding opening chords, the ringing melodies, the majestic funeral march and the furiously exciting finale. The first half of this heroic program features Beethoven's "alter ego" Rossini, whose sparkling operas were at least as revolutionary. Richard Egarr shows where both greatnesses of early Romanticism complement and contrast.
