In 1918, Prokofiev applied for permission to go to America. When the Soviet authorities asked him why he wanted to leave Russia, he replied: ‘It is time for a holiday and I need a change of air.’ In reality Prokofiev was fleeing the Bolshevist regime. When he arrived in San Francisco via Vladivostok and Honolulu later in 1918, his suitcase contained the first seeds of a commedia dell’arte that was to become The Love for Three Oranges, first performed in Chicago. The United States’ stock of musical migrants was further enriched in the 1930s with the arrival of Schoenberg. His dazzlingly imaginative arrangement of Brahms’ Piano Quartet was a masterclass in orchestration for American composers. For this concert, Martyn Brabbins conducts together both works, with Kalevi Aho’s brand-new commission for the Storioni Trio acting as a bridge between them.

Programme

Prokofiev The Love of Three Oranges, opus 33a (suite)

Aho Triple Concerto (world creation)

Brahms Piano Quartet No 1 in g, opus 25 - 4. Rondo alla zingarese
