From operas to film scores, Philip Glass has defined minimalist music since the 1980s with his signature repetitive style. His String Quartet No. 3 was composed for the 1985 film Mishima, a biographical drama about the Japanese writer Yukio Mishima. Members of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra perform excerpts from this hauntingly evocative score. The programme also features Ernst von Dohnányi, a versatile giant of Hungarian music. Encouraged by Johannes Brahms, Dohnányi remained firmly anchored in the Late Romantic tradition, offering a rich, lyrical contrast to Glass’s modern minimalism.
