Chamber Music: Mozart and Dohnányi
Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert all wrote chamber trios, but still the popularity of ‘quartets without second violins’, as they were sneeringly dubbed, never quite managed to take o®. Ernő Dohnányi’s Serenade in C major for string trio finally brought the genre out of exile in 1902. Its simple, indeed deceptive simplicity – grandiose one moment, intimate the next – is utterly captivating and more than makes up for the supposed absence of a second violin with its clarity, memorable motifs and inventive writing for accompanying parts. The genius of Mozart’s String Quintet No. 2 in C minor forms the perfect classical counterpart – both are masterclasses in string writing and beautiful pieces of music.
