Easter has become almost synonymous with Bach. In line with this venerable tradition, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra joins forces with the Flemish Radio Choir to perform the St John Passion under the baton of Philipp von Steinaecker. A protégé of Claudio Abbado, he is widely known for his sensitive handling of the baroque repertoire. The St John Passion has also been called Bach’s only opera, because of the dramatic scenes and Bach’s unrivalled sense of musical theatrality – the hair-raising opening chorus Herr, unser Herrscher gives listeners an immediate idea of what is about to come. Listen to John’s story about the powerful and inspiring Messiah during this passion concert by the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra.
