During her lifetime, the music of German Romantic composer Emilie Mayer was frequently performed, earning her the nickname “the female Beethoven.” Contemporary Elisabeth Sangalli-Marr, an advocate for women’s equality, wrote after Mayer’s death that music was “her life’s calling, her companion, her ideal.” Today, her works are far less often heard. The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of frequent guest Richard Egarr, aims to change that. Violinist Tobias Feldmann, 2015 Queen Elisabeth Competition laureate, makes his orchestra debut in Schumann’s delightful Violin Concerto.
