Although he hated being branded an ‘impressionist’, the fact remains that Maurice Ravel had such great feeling for colours, lines and timbres that you cannot only hear his polychrome orchestrations: you can see them. Which is exactly why his symphonic version of Mussorgsky’s spectacular ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ is quite rightly more famous than the original for piano. Young talent Aziz Shokhakimov conducts Ravel’s palette of sound, followed by Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández, winner of the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition, performing a haunting interpretation of Bloch’s Schelomo.
