Die Walküre is the second part of Der Ring des Nibelungen, the iconic Ring cycle that Richard Wagner composed for his theatre in Bayreuth. Wagner wanted to overwhelm the audience with a visual spectacle on stage. Although the orchestra plays a leading role, he made it invisible to the audience. The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra is now reversing the roles. During this concert performance of the first act, the orchestra and the singers take centre stage and the music is stripped of all visual elements. Experience for yourself the sheer drama of Wagner’s music: it shines even without staging or scenery. The renowned German conductor Axel Kober, celebrated for his Wagner interpretations at the Vienna State Opera and the Bayreuth Festival, leads the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and the soloists through this absolute masterpiece. Immerse yourself in the compelling story of Siegmund and Sieglinde, and for the duration of this concert, transport yourself to a completely different time and place.

Originally, conductor emeritus Jaap van Zweden was due to conduct these concerts. Unfortunately, for health reasons, he has had to cancel the upcoming concert series. However, we are delighted to announce that the German conductor Axel Kober has agreed to replace him for the concerts in Heerlen, Antwerp and Eindhoven. The programme remains unchanged; ticket holders were notified by email.
