War Requiem
Europe emerged out of the ashes of the Second World War as if by a miraculous resurrection. Despite the new climate of peace, Benjamin Britten was well aware that the past is gone, but not forgotten. Set to works by the First World War poet Wilfred Owen, the War Requiem is a bitter indictment of the futility of war in all its forms. To mark the centenary of the Armistice, our principal guest conductor Philippe Herreweghe will lead a performance of Britten’s impassioned plea. Featuring a complement of top soloists, Collegium Vocale Gent and the Opera Vlaanderen Children’s Choir, this concert promises to be a fitting commemoration.
