Aged almost fifty, Antonín Dvořák embarked on the composition of a large-scale requiem. The pious Czech took advantage of this opportunity to commit his unwavering faith in God to paper. The stirring result combines intense mysticism with solace, acquiescence and beauty, delivering expansive choral sound, memorable solos and orchestral magnificence. The perfect work, in other words, for the Antwerp Symphony’s annual concert of solace. Add the detailed interpretation of honorary conductor Philippe Herreweghe to this intriguing mix, in addition to Herreweghe’s own world-class choir and a selection of leading soloists, and you get a concert of breath-taking beauty.
