Khachatryan and the New World
Of all the romantic violin concertos, Max Bruch’s is probably ‘the richest, the most seductive’ of the lot. At least, that was the opinion of violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim, to whom Bruch dedicated this work. Leading violinist Sergey Khachatryan, the laureate of the 2005 Queen Elisabeth Competition for Violin, is happy to prove the veracity of this bold statement. Dvořáks Symphony No. 9 also received many superlative reviews. The Czech composer travelled to the United States at the height of his career, in search of the sound of the ‘New World’. The premiere of his Ninth was the greatest triumph in Dvořák’s career. To this day, it is still the most widely performed and most appreciated symphony in the entire repertoire.
